Dear Administrators, Staff Members, Students and Parents of West Seattle High School:
During the week, our media has been headlining about the super typhoon ”Haiyan”, considered by weathermen as the strongest hurricane ever in recorded history, that hit the Philippines last Friday, November 8th. Our newspapers and television news are daily sources of accounts on this tragedy and the sufferings of the Filipino people, the devastation to its infrastructure , especially in Tacloban City, Cebu, Samar, and the neighboring islands, and the seeming loss of hope of the survivors. Todate, about 2,800 deaths in Tacloban alone have been registered, not to mention the missing, the homeless and the injured. Food, water and medicine are the three basic things that will help them go on from this day to the next.
We, the West Seattle High School students and parents, administration and teaching staff, can make a difference in the lives of these people. It is in this belief that we, as a school, are organizing a Relief Campaign/Fund Drive to support the Filipinos in their present dire situations. Our efforts will be coordinated with the Filipino Community of Seattle Relief Efforts headed by the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco, with local headquarters at the Filipino Community Center (FCC) at 5740 MLK Way, Seattle, Washington, 98118. The contact person organizing these efforts is Sheila Burrus at telephone no. 2006-300-5832 or 206-722-9372.
Starting Friday, November 22nd ,properly identified blue boxes will be located in strategic places in our campus: Commons, in front of the Library, and the Math Department area (near Ms. Huong’s Room Rm. No. 202). Our relief effort will run for 3 weeks and delivery of goods to the FCC will be scheduled immediately.
Attached is a list of items that are identified as of immediate need:
Personal hygiene stuff/toiletries
Soap or detergents to wash clothes
First aid kits, especially gauzes and plasters (band-aid)
Breakfast bars (Rice Krispies, Cheerios, etc.)
Canned goods opened by hand (with pull-up tabs)
Thank you for your generosity!
