It does not seem possible that this year is already over! I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such wonderful students, staff and parents. We say goodbye to the following staff who will not be returning. Teachers Jon Bush, Don Hill, and Bonnie Saunders will be retiring and Liz Gicquel will be moving to France with her family. Instructional Assistance Corey Sampson will be moving to Rainer Beach where he will be an Instructional Assistant and football coach, and lastly Assistant Principal Mike Kelly will be moving to Roosevelt.
We appreciate your support and belief in our school. We have had a productive year with many achievements, academically, athletically and socially. Both our students and staff have flourished, and I am very proud of them. This year, as a result of our work of the past three years, West Seattle earned an achievement award from OSPI. We were awarded a Washington Achievement Award for having growth measures in the top 10%.
On Thursday, June 12, at our “Moving Up Assembly” we said goodbye to our seniors and on Saturday June 14th we held our 97th commencement ceremony. West Seattle High School is proud of its 2014 graduating class who are ready for college, career and life. We will miss them.
Athletic Registration Night will be a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, August 13th for ALL sport team participants and their parents at 7:00 PM in the WSHS Theatre. Please turn in your completed packets and payments at this time (It is highly recommended to sign up and pay for all seasons and ASB Card at this time.
The first day of school for 2014-2015 is Wednesday, September 3. You will be receiving information over the summer regarding next year. You can visit our website to see newly posted information at www.westseattlehs.seattleschools.org , and view our Westside Weekly newsletter.
Seattle Public Schools has finalized bell times – our start and end times – for the 2014-15 school year. Starting in the fall, our school will start at 7:50am and students will be dismissed at 2:20pm. This is slightly different than our current school year. For those students riding the bus, the arrival time at school will be 7:40am and the departure time after school will start at 2:20pm. These bell times are a result of changes to transportation for the 2014-15 school year, which the School Board approved on February 5. We know changing bell times is not ideal; however the District at one point had 27 different start times for schools and now has three standard start times. Creating streamlined start and end times will allow the District to save about $2.7 million in transportation costs. The full list of bell times for all schools next year is posted online at: http://bit.ly/2014-15belltimes.
It is our hope that your student has a wonderful summer. We look forward to meeting our new students and seeing our students returning in the fall.
